The following is an excellent student sample essay from eighth grader, Natasha Kuntz. The essay addresses the topic of whether schools should allow candy and soda machines on their premises.
For nearly four decades, schools all over America have added vending machines selling unhealthy snacks and drinks. However, along with the sugary snacks that they sell, come a variety of problems that can affect a student's academic performance. Vending machines should not be allowed in school because they sell unhealthy snacks, can affect school performance, and cause financial problems.
Half way through the first grading period and ArchiSci is well and truly in full swing! Middle School Science Olympiad is meeting every Thursday from 4:10 to 5:10. Middle and Upper Conservatory Engineering Club is meeting every Monday from 4:10 to 5:10. Upper Conservatory science olympiad students are meeting regularly with their respective event coaches. It is a great pleasure to work with these students and dedicated faculty to bring science and engineering to life at Archimedean. What better way to apply the advanced mathematics skills acquired through our unique curriculum.
ArchiSci is growing by leaps and bounds. With over 20 students participating in the Engineering Club we can expect to compete (and Win!) in every event this year. We have enough students to field two full Division B Science Olympiad Teams (30 students), bound for Nationals! Plus a full Division C team that is committed and determined to win.

Is the Pen Mightier than the Sword?
In my opinion, the pen has a greater impact on our society than the sword. The sword can fight a war, intimidate, cause pain, injure, cut or just be an ornament that provides pride to the owner. But, the pen can go beyond that. It can start and stop a war, by signing a treaty. It can give something to you or take something from you by signing a contract. It can establish legal relations in our society, like marriage. It can end a relationship, as in divorce. it can give and show agreement or support, in a legal court. It can determine or limit the duties and rights among people, to provide order and peace. It is also sometimes an arm that defends ideals.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you the first issue of AUC’s newspaper: The Parliament. Our school’s first newspaper is founded on the principle of informing students of issues concerning social and academic life, entertainment, advice, school sports, clubs and events, and current issues. In the years to come, I look forward to seeing The Parliament develop into a newspaper that will circulate important academic accomplishments as well as social events of AUC campus life. As the 2009-2010 academic year draws to a close, we on the editorial staff of The Parliament anticipate its growth in the coming academic year.
